The lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, under which the ISRO will for the first time attempt to land a rover on the moon's south pole, will be launched in April, Minister of State for Department of Space Jitendra Singh said on Friday. The mission will carry an orbiter, a lander and a rover, and will land on the moon's south pole and "startle the whole world", the government claimed.

Various Indian media outlets are comparing the flight of the Chandrayaan-2 to the Apollo moon landings that was undertaken nearly 50 years ago by the United States.

Chandrayaan-1 was launched in 2008 from Sriharikota off the East coast of India at an evaluated value of $83 million. The new region could also give insights into the origin of the universe said, Dr Singh.
